Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to many of our most frequently asked questions about the Outdoor Program and how to get involved!

Do you have to be an experienced outdoors person to go on a trip?

No, the vast majority of our trips are tailored for beginners and you don’t need any prior experience to join a trip. We will give each trip a rating based on how strenuous it is. A beginner trip should be pretty physically doable for anyone. An intermediate trip may require a bit more work and may involve hiking longer distances or carrying weight on your back on trips such as backpacking. Advanced trips may involve quite long distances, heavy loads, technical terrain, and exposure to the elements for extended periods of time.

What do I need to bring on an Outdoor Program Trip?

We will give you a detailed personal gear list with all of the gear you need. Most anything that you don’t have (other than things like underwear and a tooth brush) we can lend to you for the trip. We have a full gear rental shop with everything from clothing, to sleeping bags and pads, and boots and shoes.

How do you become a Trip Instructor?

We have a Trip Instructor progression where interested students can apply and move through the progression. We ask that all applicants attend at least 3 trips as a participant before applying to be an Instructor. The progression starts with becoming a Trainee then as they gain more experience they can move into an Assistant Instructor and then ultimately a full Instructor.

Do you offer scholarships for trips?

We offer two scholarships for every trip. We ask that folks pay what they can and that they give a testimonial about their experience after the trips that we can use for marketing purposes.

Are Outdoor Program Trips accessible?

We try to make outdoor experiences as accessible as possible and will work with each individual to assess their needs and find ways to meet their needs on a trip.
